Resident Evil: Afterlife

Resident Evil: Afterlife
Directed: Paul W. S. Anderson
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller

Resident Evil: Afterlife is the fourth film installment based on the massivley popular video game franchise.  The story is simple.  A virus is unleashed by the evil Umbrella corporation and turns humanity into ravenous zombie mutants.  Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) is Alice, the heroine of all four Resident Evil films.  Alice is the only person that can help the remaining survivors navigate a landscape of the undead.

Afterlife finds the living battling their way from Japan to Alaska to L.A.  Reprising her role from Resident Evil: Exctinction is Ali Larter (NBC’s Heroes).  Joining the fight is Wentworth Miller (Fox’s Prison Break). If you have seen any of these films you will know that being smoking hot is the one thing you need in order to survive a zombie apocalypse.  Larter and Miller both fit the bill.

A few things go without saying when watching a Resident Evil film.  Dialogue is not important and usually non existent.  Also, do not pay too much attention to the plot; it will have more holes than the Warren Commission Report.  The only thing that matters are the special effects and the zombie killing techniques.  Based on those two criteria they achieved success.  There are amazing visuals and the zombies face some gruesome endings.

If you have read a magazine or watched tv in the last few weeks you have no doubt seen the publicity machine in full effect for this film.  You may ask yourself, what is all the fuss about a zombie video game movie?  Well the answer is James Cameron, director of Avatar and Titanic.  Resident Evil: Afterlife is only the second movie filmed with the 3D camera system used to create Avatar.  Considering that Avatar became the highest grossing movie of all time there will be many eyes looking at the success or failure of Resident Evil: Afterlife.  In the wake of Avatar's success, there have been an endless stream of films released in 3D.  Sadly, most of them were transferred to 3D in post production.

The 3D in this film is the best I have seen since Avatar and is the true star of the movie.  In the end, it is just a silly movie.  But sometimes that is all you need.
