Porsche Design eyewear heritage meets sports car DNA in new 2020 Collection

Porsche Design eyewear heritage meets sports car DNA in new 2020 Collection fashionado

Exclusive lifestyle brand Porsche Design is known for offering an extension of the Porsche lifestyle both on and off the road, and eyewear is one of the best embodiments of that philosophy. With the launch of the new 2020 sunglasses collection, Porsche Design is tapping into its rich brand heritage and reimagining one of its most legendary styles, originally designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1978. The result: the P'8928, the first square-shaped aviator shades with an interchangeable lens mechanism. But, it is not just about the past, another highlight of this season's collection is the P'8685 Hexagon Gold Limited Edition: highly-engineered sunglasses infused with true sports car DNA and strictly limited to 500 models worldwide.

Ever since Porsche Design unveiled the brand's inaugural sunglasses in 1978, the P'8478, the world's first sunglasses with an interchangeable lens mechanism, the brand has stayed true to its iconic design philosophy to optimize function. Extraordinary design and quality materials without any frills or excessive ornamentation.  Applying the same vision and design process that led to the legendary Porsche 911, allowed F. A. Porsche to bring a new perspective to the eyewear segment that caught the eye of many – including true Porsche enthusiasts as well as notable celebrities.

Iconic: P'8928 – a design icon reborn
The P'8478 were the first glasses to offer an interchangeable lens mechanism that allowed the lenses to be easily changed based on lighting conditions – or personal taste. The P'8478 remains a true style icon recognized for both its well-thought out functionality and timeless design. Now, Porsche Design is building on that legacy and introducing the P'8928 – a modern, squared aviator reinterpretation of the classic with the same unique interchangeable lens mechanism. Revamped, yet unmistakably Porsche Design. Each pair comes with an additional set of colored interchangeable lenses, and new lens colors are introduced each season. Exclusively manufactured in Japan, using ultra-light and durable titanium, the frame makes the P'8928 extremely comfortable to wear. RRP starting from $550.

Sports car DNA and high-tech precision – the P'8685 Hexagon Gold Limited Edition
The limited edition P'8685 Hexagon Gold sunglasses are a perfect fusion of Porsche Design philosophy and uncompromising engineering. Inspired by the engine block of a sports car, eight hexagonal screws hold the solid titanium front in place giving the glasses their unmistakable and bold look. Exclusive manufacturing underscores the precise construction with each frame being crafted individually by hand. Limited to only 500 pairs worldwide. Lightweight temples made of high-performance RXP® and polarized lenses ensure maximum comfort. RRP: $1,150.

Fusion models – striking contrasts in shape, material, and surface
Also new are the Porsche Design Fusion models, featuring striking contrasts in shape, material and surface. High-performance plastic RXP® meets metal while polished and matte surfaces intersect giving them an edgy and futuristic design. The P'8366 squared aviator correction glasses and P'8690 sunglasses are the fusion highlights from this new collection.

Ultra-Light – purely the essentials
The Ultra-Light line features a design language that is reduced to the minimum – timeless, simple and elegant with a diligent focus on functionality. High quality titanium is used in the frames only where absolutely needed while the temples and front are characterized by clear lines and flowing style. With the frame weighing only five grams, they are the lightest and most minimal glasses designed by the brand.

After 42 years of iconic and forward thinking eyewear innovations, Porsche Design continues to tap into its heritage while keeping an eye on the future in order to engineer unique glasses that guarantee optimal performance and timeless style. The new collection is the next chapter in the brand's eyewear story and the latest models remain true to the core principles while offering state-of-the-art eyewear features. Whether behind the wheel or on the go, Porsche Design glasses offer maximum quality, design and engineering that stand the test of time.

2021 Spring Concentrations March 7 - April 30 (Scholarships available) are back! Penland School of Craft is proud to announce their return and line-up for workshops this Spring.

”We've been waiting for this day for months now, friends—the day we can invite you back to campus for workshops!” Penland School of Craft

Penland School of Craft is thrilled to have a lineup of six accomplished instructors ready to teach, share and learn with you for eight weeks this spring:

Beidlerbooks.jpg
  • Brien Beidler - Finishing Touches: Materials, Tools, and Methods

The “charming but completely unpretentious*” books made in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries have a unique way of harmonizing skilled craft, quirky aesthetics, and evidence of the hands that made them. With these leather bindings as our inspiration, we’ll explore the process and material details that make them so appealing while leaving room to add our own context to their structure and design. We’ll cover a range of techniques, including sewing on a frame, lacing in boards, sewing endbands, working with leather, and gold tooling with egg glair and gold leaf. We’ll place a special emphasis on finishing (applying decoration to the covered book) and making finishing tools. All levels. Code S00B

  • Matt Repsher - Finding Form and Surface

This workshop will focus on developing form and surface in pots using history, environment, and personal experiences to help students develop a unique voice in clay. I’ll share the techniques I use to create elaborately patterned vessels, including wheelthrowing, handbuilding, carving, and color slip inlay. Working mostly in mid-range stoneware fired in electric kilns, students will push the boundaries of ceramic materials by experimenting with multi-layered surface treatments using colored slips, underglazes, and glazes. Projects, exercises, and conversations will stimulate exploration and growth. All levels. Code S00CA

Studio artist; teaching: Indiana University, University of New Mexico, Penland, Pocosin Arts (NC), Arrowmont (TN), Santa Fe Clay (NM); residencies: Pocosin Arts, Penland resident artist program; collections: Boise Art Museum (ID), San Angelo Museum (TX).

  • Kit Paulson - The Explorer’s Notebook: Borosilicate Fieldnotes

A notebook is a license to explore the world. In this class, we’ll explore and catalog ideas, methods, and structures in flameworked borosilicate glass. The workshop will have a strong emphasis on daily hand-skill practice, which we’ll temper with drawing, reading, demonstrations, and slide shows. Students will learn techniques in solid structural flameworking and also build a strong foundation for making hollow, blown forms. All levels. Code S00GB

Studio artist; teaching: Pilchuck (WA), Bildwerk Frauenau (Germany), National College of Art and Design (Dublin), Pittsburgh Glass Center, Urban Glass (NYC); residencies: Rosenberg Residency at Salem State University (MA), Tacoma Museum of Glass (WA), S12 (Norway), Penland Resident Artist Program; collections: Tacoma Museum of Glass, KODE (Norway), Renwick Gallery (DC).

Thomas Campbell.jpg
  • Thomas Campbell - Fabrication Fundamentals

This workshop will focus on the fundamentals of steel fabrication with an emphasis on both functional and sculptural design. We’ll begin with weekly exercises and assignments that emphasize proper fabrication technique, design, critical thinking, and problem solving. We’ll build on these exercises to establish a skill set that will support personal exploration. Daily demonstrations will include, but not be limited to, technical drawing and layout, basic sheet-forming, MIG and TIG welding, grinding and sanding, finish work, and patination. We’ll also cover shop safety and efficient work practices. Students will leave with newly acquired skills and a thorough understanding of steel fabrication. All levels. Code S00I

Note: this workshop will not cover forging.

  • David Clemons - Wear a Great Story

Once upon a time… Whether in drama, mystery, social commentary, or personal history, stories link us to our past, teach us lessons, memorialize events and people, and look to project the future. In this workshop, guided technical and conceptual exercises will help students develop and hone their use of materials, form, iconography, and symbols to convey narratives through wearable pieces and small sculpture. Technical information will include surface embellishment, cold connections, soldering, hydraulic forming, casting, basic stonesetting, enameling, and integrating alternative materials. Bring your curiosity and willingness to explore a variety of subjects as we execute numerous pieces and live a great story during our eight weeks together. Some metalworking experience will be helpful, but this workshop is open to all levels. Code S00MA

Studio artist; teaching: University of Arkansas, Penland, Haystack (ME), Pocosin Arts (NC), Arrowmont (TN); Oregon College of Art and Craft residency; exhibitions: Crafting Futures (NC), Wear (NC), Wearable Pewter (IL and Istanbul), Appetites and Objects (MD); collections: Yale University Art Gallery (CT), Metal Museum (Memphis), Arkansas Art Center.

  • Annie Evelyn - Furniture Sampler

This furniture workshop will include a little bit of everything! Starting with a two-week chair project, we’ll cover machine- and hand-tool usage and the basics of joinery and design. We’ll spend one week on upholstery techniques and make a fully webbed, sprung, padded, and upholstered ottoman. Next, we’ll learn simple digital drawing using Rhino and cut shapes with the CNC machine. Then we’ll use that knowledge to make forms for bent lamination and steam bending. During the last three weeks, students will work on self-directed projects. Throughout, we’ll have fun and organize some campus events to bring people together (safely) to celebrate art. All levels. Code S00W

Privé Porter Opens Up First Ever Storefront in Miami's Uber-Luxury Brickell City Centre

*Photo credit World Red Eye; Hermès 20cm Birkin Faubourg Night & Hermès 20cm Birkin Faubourg Day the extremely rare set, in unused condition, on sale for $450,000

Privé Porter, the leading reseller of the most coveted Hermès Birkin handbags and luxury accessories, opened its first official brick-and-mortar storefront in Miami's uber-luxury Brickell City Centre. The new 1,250 sq. ft. location expands Privé Porter's luxury resale services from social media to retail, providing the Miami community with unparalleled access to the world's most exclusive Hermès handbags.

"With the demise of traditional retail anchors, shopping centers are looking to new, innovative brands such as Privé Porter to further attract affluent customers, and we couldn't be more proud to bring our unique offering to the Miami community at Brickell City Centre joining all the top names in luxury," says Jeffrey Berk, Managing Director of Privé Porter. "This pop-up is an audition to show that we bring the same Richard Mille-level customer whenever Privé Porter sets up shop. In a time when most retailers are shuttering stores and focusing on e-commerce, Privé Porter is seizing this opportunity to provide a first of its kind retail experience, shattering the 'glass ceiling' of secondhand luxury, legitimizing Privé Porter as a staple in the luxury community."

Privé Porter's Brickell City Centre store is bringing high fashion, luxury shopping and one-of-a-kind exclusive products to the Miami area, with Italian furnishings, chic Enno furniture and inventory handled only by certified staff. The store is fully secured with locked entrances and exits to limit the number of customers who can experience the exclusive handbags within the shop.  Each bag is an unused, pristine example of one of the different sizes of an Hermès Birkin or Kelly, ranging in price from $15,000 to $250,000 depending on the styles on display. Privé Porter continues to maintain a robust inventory through its passionate community of collectors, and specializes in sourcing rare and unique Hermès styles for clients including new 2020 color ways such as Vert Criquet, Sellier Rainbow, and Bleu Brume.

"Privé Porter is a unique re-sale concept that we are very excited to welcome to Brickell City Centre," said David Martin, Vice President, Retail, of Swire Properties. "Re-sale is an increasingly important part of the luxury eco-system, and increasingly desirable to discerning shoppers. It will allow them to dip their toes into the ultra-luxury side of fashion, and fits perfectly with Brickell City Centre's exciting mix of retailers and restaurants."

While Berk founded Privé Porter in 2008, it wasn't until his wife, Michelle, took over with her love, knowledge and experience of the luxury goods market that turned the brand into the largest and most reliable source for brand new Hermès collectible handbags and accessories. Privé Porter was a first adopter of Instagram e-commerce in 2013, gaining a cult following of consumers who wanted hassle-free access to Hermés handbags, without the notorious roadblocks. Stars such as Kris Jenner, Paris Hilton, Cardi B, Keyshia Ka'Oir, Jeffree Star and more have become avid customers, turning to Privé Porter to not only source rare Hermés styles, but customize them as well.

To-date, Privé Porter's most expensive bag ever sold was a rare Hermès 30cm Gris Cendre Diamond Himalaya Crocodile Birkin with 18K Gold Hardware, selling for an impressive $500,000, close to three times more than what it retailed at Hermès. The brand's new storefront ushers in a new chapter for the luxury reseller, bringing their exclusive shopping experience to the affluent community of Miami, cementing their place as a pillar in the new age of luxury retail.

Unveiling the Jonathan Adler Home Fragrance Limited Edition Collection by Maison Berger

Maison Berger and Jonathan Adler come together with their limited edition collection of high-end home fragrance rituals. Maison Berger Paris' one-of-a-kind scents blend with the bold universe and craftsmanship of Jonathan Adler. This collaboration gives birth to two collections both inspired by the designer's iconic style. Each collection and scent have been crafted to bring Modern American Glamour to any interior.

"I only speak about 10 words of French, but two of them are definitely 'Maison Berger!'  I was so excited to marry my designs to their iconic home fragrances and I hope you love the collection as much as I do.  The best homes not only look good, they smell good too, n'est-ce pas?" said Jonathan Adler.

THE MUSE COLLECTION is inspired by the archetypal creations of Jonathan Adler and the desire to create a chic, elegant, and functional decor. The collection features three porcelain vessels with refined shapes and Adler's surreal touches such as embossed lips with sparkling gold metallic details.

  • The catalytic lamp and the reed diffuser rituals display motifs from Jonathan Adler's iconic Muse vase. Both tops' patterns reproduce the artist's famous table leg.

  • The scented candle ritual reflects the same design finesse.

The Muse rituals diffuse an exclusive perfume designed to transport you into a world of authenticity conveying values such as honesty and open-mindedness. Imperial Green Tea is rounded off with notes of sandalwood and a backdrop of modern musks.

THE Mr. & Mrs. COLLECTION pops with its bold graphic interplay between black and white and pays tribute to the genius of Salvador Dalí—a strong source of inspiration for Adler—representing his mustache, and to his muse, Misia Sert, representing her lips. The collection includes four different rituals:

  • Catalytic lamp

  • Reed diffuser

  • Scented candles

  • Car diffusers

The Mr. rituals are packed with Wilderness, a crafted fragrance that is at once powerful, conquering, and airy, with scents of tomato leaves that rub shoulders with citrus in the top notes.

The Mrs. rituals are filled with vibrant Citrus Breeze fragrance that possesses citrus facets—a favorite of Adler's—as well as the presence of vetiver in the base note.

Two iconic brands with recognized savoir-faire and like-minded ethos

The Maison Berger X Jonathan Adler collaboration embodies the perfect alchemy between Modern American Glamour interior design & French luxury home fragrance.

"The combination of the unique and modern style of Jonathan Adler and the long tradition of Maison Berger for the finest home fragrances is creating an extraordinary range of products and emotions. We are truly proud and extremely excited to launch this new collection across the globe," said Maison Berger North America President Guillaume Wehrlin.

The full collection is available at maison-berger.com, maison-berger.ca or jonathanadler.com, and in Jonathan Adler stores.

HALLOWEEN NIGHTMARES:

Based on classic harvest and horror themes, HALLOWEEN NIGHTMARES’ story begins over one hundred years ago when the survivors of a brutal family feud sought vengeance against another mountain clan. Utilizing evil powers stolen from monsters beneath the earth, they were transformed into savage bat-like creatures and slaughtered their enemies on Halloween night! This Halloween, these subterrain monsters have resurfaced once more, disguised as distorted costumed revelers bent on bringing destruction to the cursed town of Whyshburg! Guests can expect eerie shadow creatures, legions of grinning jack-o’-lanterns, the Lair of the Ancient Alchemist, the Chamber of the Elder Thing and the Temple of the Bat God. Prepare for more vintage Halloween horror than one’s melted mind can handle!

CYBORG SHOCK:

Can guests survive the Robot Rampage? A strange metallic obelisk of unknown origin stored in a secret facility known as the BOX has blasted out an electromagnetic pulse and seized control of the entire base. Now the robotics and cloning sections have begun creating nightmarish Cyborgs, half metal and half flesh, animated by a strange energy emanating from the artifact. This army of hybrid horrors is making its way to the surface armed with the most advanced weaponry imaginable, bent on total domination! Can guests halt this menace before they escape to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world?

MUCHO MUCHO AMOR - A New Netflix Original Documentary of Walter Mercado

Watch our interview with the filmmakers behind Mucho Mucho Amor. Alex Fumero, Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch share stories about the life of Walter Mercado and production of the film.

Watch our interview with the filmmakers behind Mucho Mucho Amor. Alex Fumero, Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch share stories about the life of Walter Mercado and production of the film.

Every single day for decades, extravagant Puerto Rican astrologer, psychic, and gender nonconforming legend Walter Mercado charmed the world with his televised horoscopes. Equal parts Oprah, Liberace, and Mr. Rogers, Walter was a celebrated daily part of Latin culture, who at his peak reached over 120 million viewers. Since childhood, Walter was regarded as a healer, but his greatest miracle might have been his personal transformation from shy farm boy to flamboyant showman. Walter enthralled much of the world with sequined capes, opulent jewelry and pressing horoscopes that shared a message of love and hope to his devoted viewers — until one day he mysteriously disappeared.

Over a decade later award-winning documentarians Cristina Costantini (Science Fair) and Kareem Tabsch (The Last Resort) plus producer Alex Fumero (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson) received unprecedented access to Walter during his post-fame seclusion and invite us into his home and interior world. With MUCHO MUCHO AMOR, they capture Walter’s final two years, when the pioneering icon grappled with aging and his legacy, as he prepared for one last star-studded spectacle. We invite you to view the first trailer for MUCHO MUCHO AMOR, the new Netflix Original Documentary about the iconic Latinx astrologer Walter Mercado. We hope you will discover the magic, mysticism and the love of Walter Mercado.  A hit at the Sundance Film Festival this year, the film is releasing globally on Netflix July 8th.

For many, Walter Mercado has been a household name for generations.  He was that optimistic/larger than life character that came into everyone's household via television.  For some he was even bigger than Oprah and uber flamboyant like that of Liberace. But he was always full of love, life and inspiration! We need some Walter right now!!!

Every day for decades, Walter Mercado mesmerized 120 million Latinx viewers with his extravagance, glamour, and artistry. Viewers across generations and all over the world gathered around the TV eagerly waiting for him to deliver his daily reading of your sign. Award-winning documentarians Cristina Costantini (Science Fair) and Kareem Tabsch (The Last Resort) direct MUCHO MUCHO AMOR, produced by Alex Fumero (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson). “We sincerely hope you will become inspired by Mercado’s message of understanding, peace mucho paz and above all love mucho mucho amor.”
