Comme des Garçons Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear

The Future of Silhouette.” That's about all the evidence that Rei Kawakubo revealed about Comme des Garçons Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear collection... and that's okay! It's really more than enough information. Rei Kawakubo is an artist and fashion design is her medium.

Met Gala announces 2017 theme: Comme des Garçons’s Rei Kawakubo

“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years,” said the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, Andrew Bolton. “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”

This is not only exciting but big, big news since Rei Kawakubo will be the first living designer to serve as the theme and inspiration of the Met Gala since Yves Saint Laurent.

Vogue's Met Gala is fashion's biggest soiree bringing out an elite guest list of fashion designers and celebrities. Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams will cochair the event along with Anna Wintour of course. The Met Gala will take place on May 1, 2017.

The Costume Institute exhibit will feature 120 looks from Comme des Garçons/Rei Kawakubo.

Comme des Garçons MEN 2015: Soldier of Peace

High fashion makes a big statement on the runway, but Comme des Garçons' Rei Kawakubo is no stranger to evoking thought through her craft. Her anti-war, peace-loving message this season was made loud and clear through sartorial metaphor. The Spring 2015 collection's theme, "Soldier of Peace," speaks for itself and delivers it's powerful message. View Collection:

Comme Des Garçons Fall 2014

"The theme of the collection this time is MONSTER. It's not about the typical Monster you find in sci-fi and video games. The expression of the Monsters I have made has a much deeper meaning. The craziness of humanity, the fear we all have, the feeling of going beyond common sense, the absence of ordinariness, expressed by something extremely big, by something that could be ugly or beautiful. In other words, I wanted to question the established standards of beauty." Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons.

I am seriously obsessing! Rei Kawakubo gave us living, breathing human art disguised as fashion.

What is beauty anyway? And does it have to be functional or wearable? View Collection:

Comme des Garçons 2012

comme-des-garcons-vincent-martinez-fashionado

There are fashion designers and then there are artists who design fashion. And though I love them all, my heart always leans towards the ones that utilize the runway as theater, canvas or a pedestal for their vision. The garments are sometimes, not necessarily wearable. But they make statements just like a song writer does with powerful lyrics or a painter with a brush and an opinion. You may not always "get" it but keeping an open mind is critical.

Enter,

Comme des Garçons

Spring 2012.

Designer

Rei Kawakubo

takes us on a dramatic journey in lavish white satins that displayed a collection about life, birth, death and every major event in between.

The pieces are more conceptual than referential in some cases. Kawakubo interpreted life's major events through garments that represented ritualistic tradition such as christening and wedding gowns.

The result was a collection empowered with the spirit of the avant-garde and the structural presence of couture.
