AREA FW 2023 NYFW

AREA's Fall/Winter 2023 NYFW collection is a testament to creativity and innovation, drawing inspiration from the historical significance of bones and fur and reimagining their symbolism in contemporary fashion.

Founded in 2014 by designers Piotrek Panszczyk and Beckett Fogg, AREA has evolved to creatively lead under Panszczyk's direction. The collection focuses on two core materials: bones and fur, exploring how their connotations have transformed over generations.

Historically, fur was used primarily for warmth but has become a symbol of glamour, albeit with environmental concerns. AREA modernizes fur by using trompe l'oeil denim, fluid crepe viscose, and silk jacquard. The brand creatively photocopies age-old fur pelts and drapes them with triangular shapes, incorporating them into skirts, dresses, and couture coats. This textural treatment extends to trousers and outerwear, creating striking garments that redefine fashion for the elite.

The collection also pays homage to the world's earliest bone jewelry, reinterpreting it for the year 2023. AREA crafts organic bone shapes using three design techniques: lacquer, crystal bombé, and molding. Lacquered bone iterations feature resin enamel and Swarovski rivoli crystal embellishments, enhancing couture gowns. Crystal bombé bones take the shimmer to new heights with thousands of Swarovski gems forming skull heads, bracelets, and colliers. Molded claws add a touch of disruptive distressing to formalwear and denim.

Panszczyk's vision for this collection reflects a futuristic utopia, even if it may only exist in a parallel universe. AREA continues to push the boundaries of fashion, challenging conventional expectations and creating a world where fashion meets innovation and history meets modernity. The juxtaposition of the collection's inspirations against the backdrop of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, a historical institution, adds a layer of depth to the overall concept, making it a truly memorable and thought-provoking presentation.
