FOWL LANGUAGE

by

Pilliard Dickle

Have you ever noticed how some birds sound like they’re saying a word? Like Bob White? Or Whip Poor Pill? The one that stands out most to me is one I used to hear as a kid. It said “pretty,” but with a Southern redneck lilt. It went “purdy purdy purdy.” We used to call it the Purdy Bird. Other birds occasionally uttered various words, like the one that went “t-shirt, t-shirt, t-shirt, t-shirt.”

That one wasn’t as laid back as the Purdy Bird. It was urgent, like a t-shirt emergency. “T-shirt! T-shirt!

T-shirt! T-shirt!” (Or, according to a boy down the street, “Teacher! Teacher! Teacher!” But he was wrong.) But of all spoken-word birds, it was the Purdy Bird that offered the most distinct and unmis-takable enunciation.

Years later I was walking in the park with my girlfriend at the time (later wife, now not) (but we’re still good friends) and I heard a Purdy Bird in a tree. I said, “Oh, listen, it’s the Purdy Bird. He’s saying “Purdy, purdy, purdy....”

“It’s ‘birdy,’” she corrected. “Listen.”

It went “purdy, purdy, purdy.”

“See?” she said. “‘Birdy, birdy, birdy!’”

She said the kids in her neighborhood heard it as “birdy.” In fact, that’s what they called it: the

Birdy Bird

.

A needless conversation ensued, not an argument per se, just a bunch of ya-ya that convinced neither

side of the other’s opinion, so I will refrain from recapping it here. Anyway, that’s not what this bird

tale is about. I want to tell you about a bird much more sinister—some would say even dangerous—

than either the Purdy Bird or the T-shirt bird. This bird went “

fuh-KEW

,

fuh-KEW

.” Plain as day.

The

Fuhkew Bird

, as it came to be known, made its first appearance in the late nineties in southern

Indiana. Nobody is sure how this bird so suddenly metamorphosed into such a

smartass

. It seems

unlikely that a bird’s natural call, which evolves over millennia, would change so quickly on its own.

There’s a theory that it was the work of a savvy breeder of wild birds with a twisted sense of humor and

a vendetta against the general populace of Indiana. According to Wikipedia, a bird’s natural call could

be altered through the use of audio loops and behavioral modification techniques in as little as three

generations.

The Fuhkew Bird went relatively unnoticed for a couple of years, but eventually it started spreading

throughout the Midwest and up into the Northeast, and—this was its downfall—down South, into the

Bible belt. And this was during the Bush administration, an era marked by a return to family values,

and national angst over such threats to the country as Howard Stern and Janet Jackson’s left breast. A

movement was started to censor this vulgar menace. (

The bird, not Howard Stern

). It was a special task

force of undercover operatives recruited from the heartland of America. Their mission was to protect

innocent citizens by bringing this barrage of insults to a halt. Their weapons were the slingshot and

the bb gun. Hundreds of righteous crusaders, disguised as nine to eleven year old boys, quietly roamed

neighborhoods across the nation, slingshots in hand, committing what amounted to birdacide.

Today the song of the Fuhkew Bird has been silenced. It died to conform to our own sense of standards

and practices. No longer can you hear it singing its sweet song in neighborhoods across this great land

of ours.

But it turned out to be like putting out a forest fire with water pistols. Other insult birds started crop

ping up all around the country, presumably the handiwork of copycat breeders, spouting off all manner

of profanity. Like the Bite Me Bird of northern California. And the Suck It Bird, indigenous to western

Maine. And a bird that’s just recently appeared in central Iowa. It goes “Cruz-Palin, Cruz-Palin, 2016!”

Now if you ever hear one of these birds, please don’t take it personally. These phonemes don’t mean to

us what they mean to it. It’s just an innocent bird doing what comes natural: warbling its own distinc

tive noise in an effort to attract a mate and perpetuate its species.

So if you think about it, the Fuhkew Bird was never really saying “fuh-KEW”—it was saying “fuk-

ME.”

Jeffrey Atlanta hosted designer Prabal Gurung last night with a champagne reception at the end of day one of his trunk show. Today is day two, so hurry!

And get a peek of Gurung's amazing Spring 2014 collection. Inspired by the elegant woman, the collection offers an effortless balance between the classic silhouette and modernity. It's gorgeous, edgy yet very feminine. I especially loved the use of bold graphic prints.

I told Prabal Gurung how much I enjoy his artistic and conceptual approach to runway and (with a big grin) he acknowledged that it's a designer's "12 minutes of indulgence" for their hard work. I replied with a "feel free to over-indulge!"

Prabal's a big fan of Jeffrey Fashion Cares NYC and I (as you know) Atlanta, so we compared notes and agreed he needs to get down here and I up there! [Let's] make it happen.

Apparently, she scared small children who were visiting Disney Studios ... Disney tells the story of Sleeping Beauty (Elle Fanning) through the point of view of Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie. The reign of terror falls upon us Summer 2014!

Trailer Trivia:

Angelina and Brad Pitt's daughter is the little girl running through a field (about 20 seconds into the Maleficent trailer.)

Five Ways How Fashion Designers Stay Fabulous While Pregnant

Five-Ways-How-Fashion-Designers-Stay-Fabulous-While-Pregnant-fashionado
Five-Ways-How-Fashion-Designers-Stay-Fabulous-While-Pregnant-fashionado

For most women, being "with child" doesn't always make her feel fashionable. Let's face it, it's inspiring when we see our favorite designers pregnant and looking fabulous. We want to know their secret. If you feel you could never pull off a double-take look while pregnant, here are the secrets to getting the same affect as our favorite designers.

#1 Be Yourself: Hint You Are Not a Leopard!

rachel zoe

Very rarely does animal print work for expanding bellies. Some svelte and tall women can pull this off, but most of us can't. Designers know this. The reason is prints tend to draw focus to the expanding parts and not in a good way.

Rachel Zoe pulled off the print on a mag cover of the Hollywood Reporter only because the prints exactly offset and emphasized her best features.

If you just can't stand to go without animal print for many months, make sure the lines offset and compliment and that they don't distract. Otherwise, bring bold prints in by accessorizing: a colorful or textured scarf, sexy necklace, or even headband better emphasizes the areas you want emphasized, and not the ones you don't.

#2 Speaking of Svelte, Designers Use Maternity Compression Leggings

These maternity leggings are a wonder of our modern maternity world. They not only reduce swelling, but they look good, too. Designers, busy on their feet all day welcome the relief of feeling good when pregnant, and who doesn't? Everything helps! These come in fun colors and bring interesting style and flair to a monotone knee-length dress or even cute shorts.

#3 Think Black

When pregnant, Frida GianniniGucci's Creative Director, looked amazing in a black frock dress and leggings. When in doubt and not feeling overly fabulous, wearing black is slimming and uplifting. Again, the key is to use punches of color to accentuate the black.

#4 Heels Help

Yes, feet swell when pregnant; so you might think heels are the last thing you want to wear when pregnant. But a great pair of boots with a stable heel and a zipper can actually make getting footwear off easier when pregnant. But even better, they lengthen one's line, creating better form.

#5 Wonderful Food In Moderation

What better time to eat well than when pregnant? Women have a natural glow while pregnant and now that you are eating for both you and baby, food is more important than ever. Model turned designer Alessandra Ambrosio made sure not to curb food she loved, but the portion sizes. Several small meals a day while pregnant helped her maintain a good pregnancy weight. While she enjoyed ice cream and treats, she also welcomed kale, green juices and fish. You can eat well, and eat a lot over a day, without overeating. This decreases both heartburn and bloating which of course increases well being.

Feeling fabulous while pregnant is important.

Why shouldn't you?

After all, you're about to take on one of the greatest, awe-inspiring gifts in life-motherhood. You deserve to feel your best while pregnant. Using these tips will help you look great, so you feel great.
