Russell Tovey and Olivia Colman to Star as Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow in New Fashion Film “Wild Bird”

A new film exploring one of fashion’s most legendary and emotionally charged relationships is headed to the screen. “Wild Bird,” a forthcoming short film centered on the bond between Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, will star Russell Tovey and Olivia Colman.

Directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Andrew Haigh — known for All of Us Strangers, 45 Years, and Weekend — the film revisits the deeply influential connection between McQueen and Blow, two defining figures of 1990s fashion culture.

Tovey will portray the late designer Alexander McQueen, while Colman steps into the role of Isabella Blow, the visionary fashion editor widely credited with discovering and championing his talent early in his career. Blow became both mentor and muse to McQueen as he rose through the fashion ranks, though their relationship later fractured when McQueen took over as head designer at Givenchy and Blow was not offered a position within the maison.

Following Blow’s death in 2007, McQueen famously dedicated his next runway show to her memory — cementing their relationship as one of fashion’s most poignant creative partnerships.

Written by Russell Tovey, “Wild Bird” is produced by HATO Pictures and developed in collaboration with WeTransfer’s Oscar-winning arts platform, WePresent. Rather than a traditional biopic, the film imagines Blow and McQueen embarking on a symbolic road trip in search of emotional redemption, offering a poetic and interpretive lens into their complicated friendship.

Principal photography is set to begin this June in the United Kingdom.

“I’ve had a lifelong fascination with Alexander McQueen, his artistry and persona on and off the runway,” Tovey shared. “The friendship between Isabella and Lee is beautifully tragic and endlessly compelling.”

“Wild Bird” also marks the latest collaboration between WePresent and Tovey following his 2023 guest curatorship for the platform. Previous projects included commissions highlighting LGBTQIA+ artists and “Life Is Excellent,” a documentary exploring the life of late artist David Robilliard.

With powerhouse performances, visionary direction, and one of fashion’s most mythic relationships at its center, “Wild Bird” is already shaping up to be a major cultural moment for both cinema and fashion audiences alike.
