Willy Chavarria x Zara “VATÍSIMO” Collection Channels Telenovela Drama and Latino Identity
/New York–based Latino designer Willy Chavarria is the latest visionary to join Zara’s ever-expanding roster of high-impact collaborations, unveiling a collection steeped in culture, identity, and cinematic nostalgia.
Following the buzz surrounding John Galliano’s recent partnership with the global retailer, Zara continues to broaden its creative lens—this time drawing inspiration from the heightened emotion and visual drama of classic Mexican telenovelas, set against the evocative backdrop of retro Mexico City.
More than a collaboration, Willy Chavarria x Zara is a cultural statement—one that taps into the emotional power of representation while celebrating the richness and complexity of Latino identity. Rooted in transformation, both personal and stylistic, the collection reinforces Chavarria’s ongoing mission to center heritage within contemporary fashion.
“VATÍSIMO,” the collection’s title, takes its name from the superlative form of “vato,” a colloquial term in Chicano culture used to describe friends, partners, and loved ones. It’s a tribute to community, camaraderie, and belonging—an ode to roots and the enduring bonds that define identity.
Visually, the collection remains true to Chavarria’s signature design language: romantic yet commanding, refined yet grounded in streetwear. Tailoring is bold and theatrical, featuring exaggerated proportions and sharp structure. Everyday staples—polos, hoodies, flannels, and denim—are reimagined through his elevated lens.
Womenswear introduces a nuanced balance of softness and strength, with bow-tied tops, sculpted bodysuits, and lace dresses. Meanwhile, unisex silhouettes blur traditional boundaries, reinforcing the collection’s inclusive ethos. Each piece feels like a character within Chavarria’s imagined telenovela universe—where fashion becomes narrative.
“I want the Latino community to feel seen. I want them to feel proud,” says Chavarria. “There’s so much beauty in our communities, in our stories… The message is about dignity, knowing your value, and carrying that with you.”
Launching March 26 at 12 a.m. EST via Zara, the collection is accompanied by a campaign titled “VATÍSIMO,” delivering what Chavarria describes as “beauty, drama, and humor.”
Drawing from influences as varied as vintage Mexican telenovelas and iconic American series like Dallas and Dynasty, the designer constructs a world where melodrama meets memory. The result is a visually rich narrative where exaggerated storytelling translates into bold, expressive design.
“We started with the energy and concept of the campaign in mind: glamour and drama,” Chavarria explains. “We designed for the characters—just as we do across all of our collections.”
