Back in Black

black-pearls-jewelry-fashionado

Historically black has been

the

color in fashion. In the Renaissance era, it was the color of authority and today the most important of figureheads at a runway show can be seen wearing black. That would be the buyers and the fashion editors. But it is not only through clothes that black exudes power, black shiny stones in rings and necklaces add to that illusion as well. Take

black pearls

for instance. The great Emperors of China wore these jewels to indicate their status and in French Polynesia, these black pearls were symbolic for harnessing the magic the rain leaves behind after a great storm. Hope and renewal was stored in these stones. However, you do not have to wear black pearls just with formal and tailored clothes. You can mix and match with casual wear.

vera-wang-fashionado

This spring, everyone is wearing black with floral prints because not only is it slimming but you can break up the clash of colors beautifully. The

Vera Wang Fall 2013

collection at New York Fashion Week 2013 certainly designed many great outfits using this concept. The floral prints are spread out over black in a silhouette effect and the flowers feel like they are moving down the runway.

Black onyx stones are also significant in history. The ancient Romans used onyx stones to bear their unique seals and as far as Roman mythology goes, this stone is graced by the touch of the Goddess Venus. One day, she was sleeping along the Indus River and Cupid decided to give her a manicure with one of his arrows but her nails snapped and feel into the bottom of the river, only to rise up again as onyx stones.

In India and Persia, black onyx stones were also seen as great stones of protection. But in other cultures, they were also seen as gifts to celebrate marriage and peace. Though you can buy silver bladed onyx rings, they do look better on gold rings because of their rounded shape. Onyx rings do however suit men more because of the large stone and they go along well with any good suit. Either way, you can find silver bladed Onyx rings and

black gold rings online

.

Leather, lace, tuxedos and nude lips are the fashion trend at the moment. All of these elements do strongly incorporate the strength and power black brings to clothing and jewelry  If a trip to the jewelry store is not on the cards, then you can find many black gold rings online.

As for women, black diamond rings would suit you more, especially if you have a thing for black lace.

black-diamonds-jewelry-fashionado

These truly unique and ebony glittering stones can only be found in Brazil and Africa. But unlike men, women like to pair up black diamonds with the usual white diamond in order to great a fashionable contrast. Black always goes well with white.

This idea is getting increasingly popular. Such as, if a couple wanted to both wear matching engagement rings, they would get black diamond rings because traditionally men wear black diamonds.  But often set in titanium. Women on the other hand, go for the silver ring and both parties save the gold rings for the wedding.

SHOES: thom browne men

Thom Browne Shoes
Thom Browne Shoes

Am I in love? Obsessed? Deranged? Or just a Thom Browne stalker. Maybe all of the above. Either way, I can't seem to get enough of all things TB. Noted, I've been a fan long before our First Lady "introduced" him to America, so to speak. [Have I mentioned that I have played with most of the clothing in his Tribeca showroom? The fit is as impeccable as is the style.] I'll take the pair pictured above, please.

Thank you.

Halle Berry redeemed herself in my eyes from the last Versace disaster she sported in the Golden Globes. This dress is amazing. The only thing I wish she'd do different is the hair. I would like to see something chic and structured. Not so wild.

Without a doubt, the edgiest runway show at Lincoln Center was the

Falguni

& Shane Peacock

Fall/Winter 2013 collection, which made it one of my favorites. They basically created a 3D effect with their garments by layering rich textiles. Feathers,

beadwork

, leathers, velvets and lace were meticulously presented in a classic silhouette influenced by Art Deco artist

Erte

. Balancing the luxurious softness of the collection with a harder, more powerful edge, the designers created amazing

peplum

shaped bodices out of high polished metal. The juxtaposition of the feminine sensibility with the futuristic corseted accessories

"elevated the super heroine to the next level of

," according to the designers. They achieved their intentions.

The Essential Guide to Strapping Strapless Winter Looks

by guest blogger: Mollie O'grady

Winter is just around the corner, and unless you live in a tropical paradise, it's time to put away your beloved summer wardrobe and pull out the cozy sweaters and boots...or is it?

This winter, the fashion world is exploding with fun looks that weave summer's hottest trend, the strapless dress, long into the winter months.

Try these styles to jazz up any strapless dress.

Warm

Winter can be frigid. Although it's tempting to try on cute, semi-skimpy tube dresses that go perfectly with those new peep-toe heels, you don't want to be caught outside when a gust of wind makes you cringe longingly for the Caribbean. Keeping warm in a strapless dress can be tricky business, so make sure to bundle and layer as much as you can without looking like a bag lady.

Tasteful

When wearing a strapless dress in the winter, start your look from your feet up, when those tootsies are bundled it makes a huge difference. This season it's all about the boots. From rocking boots to stilettos; boots are back in a big way. Boots make a great accompaniment to strapless dresses, as you can throw tights or even hide poodle fleece socks underneath. As noted by Urban Outfitters, this season's cute looks include pairing socks with pumps or even peep-toes to stretch your summer wear as long as possible.

Next, it's time to work those legs! Take advantage of the boat loads of cute leggings lining this year's racks. You can mix and match colors with styles, lacing looks edgy against corduroy, and sparkles match with just about anything. The same goes with tights, you can pair patterns for a fun bohemian look, or spice things up with fishnets over nude tights for warmth and style on a sassy night out.

Comfortable

Although sometimes you have to forgo a little comfort for the sake of style, if it's enough to give you frostbite, then you've gone too far. That's where layers come in. Layers are making waves across runways in a big way this year, and you can easily cash in on the cuteness. If you have fitted long sleeve shirts, or even baby doll t-shirts, you can layer them underneath your strapless dress and throw a cardigan over. Even the added warmth of a camisole paired under your strapless dress can work out nicely.

Last but not least, a jacket or coat is the most important part of a winter ensemble. There are infinite numbers of cute coats out there just begging to be paired with your favorite strapless dress. A fitted trench coat can give a strapless dress an instant elegance, taking you from a cute daytime look to fancy and warm in an instant. Puffy down coats can be added for extra "spunk" and go-anywhere attitude, or a blazer can add a muted respect for business and play time. Top your look off with a cute hat and scarf and you'll be the bell of the winter ball!

News Anchor turns Super Model for a Day

Look at what happens when you take the anchor away from the desk and she steps into the fashion closet. WSBTV Senior Anchor, Jovita Moore and I played dress up earlier this year.

Our closet: Jeffrey Atlanta;

Our playground: W Hotel Midtown. That's pretty fabulous already, huh?! Jovita was a fantastic model, a professional all the way around and together with a great team of photographers, hair & make-up artists and assistants, an amazing day of all things style occurred.

See photos:

Jovita looked relaxed yet chic in a Michael Kors zebra print poncho and linen pant. The shoes: peep toe cork sandals by Prada.

Jovita is totally glam in a Giambattista Valli chiffon gown. Shoes Prada. W Midtown Whiskey Park.

Dries van Noten blouse and printed wrap coat. Piazza Sempione pant and bronze Manolo Blahnik watersnake heels. This was one of my favorite looks on Jovita. A perfect modern pairing with the setting.

Girls just want to have fun in a Dries van Noten blouse and Jason Wu ostrich feathered skirt. The shoes are a hot pink Prada.

Classy and classic in a Giambattista Valli black beaded sleeveless dress. Love the red lip.

After the shoot, Jovita dashed off to the station and delivered the evening news - glamorously in fashion hair and make-up.

*Big thanks to Don Purcell at Jeffrey Atlanta. Hair/Makeup: Tymeka McNeal, Zavia Ross. Photos: Tomas Espinoza.
