Avoid an Office Holiday Party Wardrobe Malfunction: The Do's and Don'ts

by guest blogger Jason Torres

ugly-sweater-xmas-holiday-party-fashionado

The office holiday party is coming and you do not want to be hiding your face behind your notepad as you walk through work on Monday ashamed of your behavior. Your goal is not to find someone to kiss under the mistletoe at this shindig, but to celebrate a good year and job well done working together.

Approach the office holiday party as you would your

photo Christmas cards

. These greetings are going to a variety of locations: from your mom and dad to your best friends from college. You want to be you, but you don't want to be too over the top — office holiday party.  It's not worth risking your professional reputation by being a blundering idiot. These

do's

and

don'ts

apply to both women and men (except maybe the little black dress part).

Do

  • Get Your Sparkle On — However, if you're in your closet choosing your outfit and you pick up that glittery Vegas dress or suit, go ahead and put that right back in the closet. Probably going to be too much for the office party. But don't let that stop you from wearing something glittery and adorned with sequins - just keep it real.
  • The Little Black Dress — Classic and lovely, the little black dress is appropriate for your office party. Think about adding a scarf or big and bold accessories. Oh and shoes, add some sassy shoes.
  • Don't Stray From Your Style — Whether you are funky, sophisticated, playful or classic, come as yourself. This isn't Halloween. Being yourself will assure your comfort throughout the evening, in turn allowing you  to have a good time and not worry about a possible wardrobe malfunction.
  • Plan Small Talk — It's not a bad thing to be prepared for conversation. Talk with people in different departments. Introduce yourself to the bosses you may have not met. This may be the best chance to get to know people you see every day.
  • Thank the Party Planners — Whether you know it or not, there is a lot of preparation that goes into an office holiday party. The coordinator has to start in October in order to nail down the date and location for that very busy weekend in December. That is just the beginning of months of planning. Be sure to recognize.

Don't

  • Tuck Away the Cleave, Ladies — Again, office party. Not a time to show off your guns. Guaranteed, the dates of your fellow male co-workers will be quietly planning a drink spill on those boobies.
  • Shear Fabric — If it's see-through, people will be looking. Do you really want creepy Charlie from Accounting watching you all night?
  • Go Casual — The office party planning committee would be slightly offended if you decided the party wasn't important enough for you to dress nicely. Skip the casual attire and put on your pearls and cufflinks.
  • Christmas Sweaters — Unless it's an ugly sweater party, definitely leave the holiday decorations on the desk. Everyone probably already knows how much you love Christmas by the shape of your desk so show them another side to you. Leave the reindeer headband at home.
  • Get Funky Monkey — Don't get drunk at the party! No one has ever benefited by trying to keep up with Ke$ha on the Drunk-o-Meter. Even though you feel comfortable because you and your boss are chatting it up, remember, come Monday morning, you are not best friends. He or she is still your boss and will remember what you said, because surely they are watching their behavior. (hmm...or are they?)
  • Post Pictures — Your co-workers may not want their pictures posted on social media . Don't post without asking them first. Same goes for checking them into Yelp or Facebook, respect their privacy.

Creating The Perfect Outfit From an Assortment of Clothes at Home

brooks-brothers-fashionado

A noted romance author enters an event. She is wearing a striking outfit that instantly becomes the talk of the party. Perfectly accessorized, her ensemble is thought to be the work of some contemporary gonzo couturier. It must have cost thousands, the murmurs suggest.

In reality, the outfit started life as men's pajamas the author picked out of a junk pile at a thrift store. They weren't even part of the same pair of pajamas, but their colors matched nicely. The print was striking and unique. She donned a belt, some cool jewelry and went out in style. No one knew the thing cost her $2.

The key is to always choose quality, no matter where you find it. That's the essential ingredient whether you buy the clothing item at a second-hand store or at a

Brooks Brothers

store. If you have a ready supply of high quality fashions, like

1818 Suits from Brooks Brothers

, then any mix of them will always have the élan of fine fashion. Learning to combine the items is merely an added skill.

Here are a few basic rules:

1) Contrasts work nicely when done tastefully. This is what made our romance author's tout ensemble a slap-up success. She wore a pair of men's silk pajamas with some pricy jewelry and a designer belt. On another occasion, she donned an old motorcycle jacket, silk camisole and a pair of lace leggings with some steampunk boots. Her husband wore antique riding breeches, a high-collar shirt and a Brooks Brothers jacket.

2) Don't act your age. Dress against expectations. People tend to mentally file their impressions of people in line with their expectations. Those fabulous, expensive designer togs may well fade into the visual party hum if it's exactly what most people would expect you to wear. Too many other party attendees will be wearing something similar. There are only so many ways to cut a suit or dress. If you surprise people, they will remember.

3) Don't stick with one designer. Naturally, you'll want to trend toward the best clothing companies, like Brooks Brothers Clothing, but pairing that suit with a constrasting style of designer can be fun.

4) Wash, iron, press, launder and do whatever else must be done to make your clothes ready and presentable when you need them. If your clothes are ready and waiting, it's easier to toss-up great salad attire at the last minute. If you have to stop and launder one item, you'll find yourself with much less time to complete your designer look.

5) Last looks are essential. Be sure to gauge yourself honestly.

Once you're secure in your apparel, you'll wear it with confidence

. Our romance author didn't walk into her party feeling like she was wearing old pajamas. She dressed like she looked fantastic -- and she did.

Lastly, enjoy yourself. Bring with the experience a feeling of fun and you'll carry that emotion with you throughout the event you're attending. Your attitude is the best accessory of all.

The Suitable Man

suitable-man-vincent-martinez-eidi-stylemagvm-fashionado

It's party time!

But first, let's rewind...

Many months back,

Eidé Magazine

partnered with

Trio Tailoring

on a pretty ambitious campaign. Together, they hand-picked five men who represented a range of diversity from age to career to ethnicity, orientation and personal style.

I am thrilled to be a part of this group.

Trio Tailoring, an Atlanta based custom suit company met with each one of us, took our measurements and allowed us to choose our fabrics. This was a very detailed, very hands-on experience. Super fine wools and Egyptian cottons were only the beginning. We also chose colors and patterns to suit our personality. Placket, cuffs, collar width, etc , etc??? All choices for us to personalize our suit.

Guys, this is the way to shop!

When the suits were ready, Trio Tailoring scheduled a fitting and a couple weeks later, Eidé Magazine arranged a photo shoot. It was fantastic! We looked so dapper and stylish, classic and modern. The images are featured in Eidé Magazine.

On Thursday, October 25th, celebrate

The Suitable Man

with Eidé Magazine, Trio Tailoring and five of the best dressed men in the city (thanks Trio!) The party starts at 7pm at Park Tavern.

RSVP: PR@Eidemagazine.com

Eidé Magazine raises the question: what makes a suitable man?

Thank you

Trio Tailoring

and

Eidé Magazine!

I love my three-piece suit and custom shirt, especially in that I had a hand in every aspect of creating the look.

See you Thursday!

Designer Norman Ambrose at Verdura Fifth Avenue

norman-ambrose-nyfw-verdura-fashionado

New York Fashion Week may be three weeks behind us but the

Norman Ambrose

2013 collection still resonates in my head with exquisite visions of elegance and sophistication. After battling the madness of the tents at Lincoln Center it was such a welcome change to be a guest at the Ambrose show. For starters, the venue set the tone.

Verdura jewelry boutique on Fifth Avenue, founded by Duke Fulco di Verdura, with its rich history and views of Central Park, was the perfect setting. Guests were greeted with champagne and an orchid on every seat. Verdura not only hosted the fashion show but also furbished the stunning jewelry that Ambrose paired with select pieces. The collection itself was a couture-like experience with much of the beading, detailing and embellishments painstakingly done by hand - a personal choice by Norman Ambrose which spoke loudly of his high standards and desire for perfection. The collection was quite beautiful and very chic. Ambrose offered a variety of gorgeous, head-turning looks to entice and dress the uptown girl or the sophisticated socialite. One thing is certain, you will be noticed in Norman Ambrose... and what I gathered from some of the guests, once you have Ambrose on your back, you're hooked!

Rachel Zoe / Spring 2013

rachel-zoe-spring-2013-nyfw-fashionado

One of the more sought after runway shows at NYFW had to be

Rachel Zoe

. The pre-show energy was proof of that! As the first model walked out in flats and wearing a wide-legged pantsuit with the blazer draped over her shoulders, the level of sophistication from the styling was undeniably Rachel Zoe. The pantsuits came in various interpretations - flowy leg, tapered leg, shorts, belted jackets. There was also a good amount of sparkle from sequin and spangled mini-dresses which were styled with the signature Rachel Zoe bohemian look. I'm not a boho fan, but Zoe's approach is so chic that the bohemian is an element rather than the focal point. My favorite pieces were the slouchy, oversized spangled tees paired with floor-length skirts.

Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 2012 Campaign

alexander-mcqueen-ad-campaign-fashionado

"Beautiful Future. The soft bed of the forest floor by day and night. The domed caps and rippling underbellies of mushrooms and other fungi. Light and shade, power and protection, hyper-femininity and strength." A poetic description by Alexander McQueen.

Givenchy Haute Couture Fall 2012

givenchy-fall-2012-couture-runway-fashionado

A bohemian rhapsody of luxe and riches for

Givenchy

Fall 2012.

Riccardo Tisci

delivered gypsy couture to the reverence of Hubert de Givenchy's streamlined '60s silhouette and the praise of fine craft work. Floor length leather fringe, beaded and woven into intricate pattern; mink-trimmed capes and bodices where the fur was meticulously shaved to look and feel like velvet; and cashmere, crepe and sequins contribute to the layers of complexity that make this collection brilliant and breathtaking.
