Was it a 1970’s “Glam Rock” concert or the Hakan Akkaya Fall 2019 collection?  That was the question on everyone’s mind as they sat along the U-shaped runway at Spring Studios on Sunday.  The Istanbul based designer presented his 3rd collection as part of NYFW in the cavernous Gallery I.  The massive space was filled to the brim with an audience dressed to impress, perfectly complementing the show-stopping looks that walked.

Black, White & Metallic Silver, with a small dash of Metallic Pinks thrown in as an accent, made up every look of the collection of a Women’s & Men’s full designer range.  The cameras & phones went a-flutter when the key looks appeared.  The various looks in Black with Silver studs & spikes for Women proved to be audience favorites as did the range of inventive, body-con dresses, some with incredible sleeve and super strong shoulder details.  A range of Black & White, bold-striped faux furs for both Men & Women had every person in the room taking notice.

As the finale walk-around commenced, the entire audience shrieked their approval, only to ramp it up even more when designer himself, Hakan Akkaya, walked the entire runway, nearly floating with pride as he blew kisses to his legions of fans, new & old alike.

Alice + Olivia signature patterns, sequins and overall glam prevailed. A ball skirt with an image of the Eiffel Tower reigned supreme - it was exquisite. The collection is vibrant in every sense of the word and is comprised of must-have separates - from palazzo pants, bomber jackets, blazers and full skirts - there is something for everyone. There (as usual) was an abundance of florals and intricate pattern, on almost everything, to keep the A+O girl happy.

Australian brand Ozlana presented their much-anticipated new collection DREAM STILL____ at New York Fashion Week. An edgy yet romantic take on street couture, the new collection highlighted their experimental textiles, quality fabrics, and sustainable artisan techniques.

The mood at the runway was serene, with a naturalistic set design featuring dried wildflowers and pampas grass, soft fur overlays, and lightweight cloud props hanging from the air, illuminated in soft hues. The sound of chirping birds and projected moving scenes of waves and stars created an immersive experience, as if within nature, in the heart of midtown New York.

DREAM STILL____ translates a tale of nostalgia as a woman builds her life in the city, recalling her beautiful countryside youth, and lapsing into a sweet recollection of what has been. Presenting an All Seasons collection, and subverting the traditional fashion calendar, OZLANA brings a new moment to their audience, combining highly wearable, practical fashion with an idealistic, dreamy mood.

Strange loop: Humans habitually live in a well-defined world, and everything they do has reasons and meaning.

For Spring Summer 2019, Yajun examined the "isomorphic" relationships of men, women and clothing. Inspired by the art of M.C. Esher where everything seems to loop with no beginnings or endings, this collection attempted to push the conformity of design and practicality to greater heights. Presenting menswear and womenswear on the runway this season, Yajun invited the audience to rethink how garments are worn and viewed, offering endless possibilities of interpretation. Jackets, shirts, pants and pockets were wrapped in "strange loops" leaving you to decide its placement, form and function. Yajun SS19 is a collection for the modern thinker with an open mind and a great sense of style.

Designers often look to the past to create a new future and Spring Summer 2019 was just like that for Jun Jie. The menswear and womenswear designer presented a rich collection of 70s retro inspired looks. Bold colors and strong pattern while giving a nod to the past, still embraced a young, modern and chic approach. Jun Jie also featured hand bags and futuristically fabulous shoes. Models stood, sat and posed in an art deco influenced set which help drive the play in time and era of the very well received collection.

Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear

alice + olivia’s Fall 2017 collection is inspired by Salman Rushdie’s novel The Enchantress of Florence. The collection draws from the vibrant rich settings of Mughal India and the romanticism of Renaissance Florence, depicting the story of a woman creating her own destiny in a man’s world.

Stacey Bendet has created a rich wardrobe for the global woman, a woman, who like Rushdie’s enchantress, has “forged her own life, beyond convention, by the force of her will alone.”

Comprised of an eclectic mix of pieces and a sharp color palette of reds, pinks, and jewel tones, Bendet has created a serene fantasy with notes of magic realism for this collection. In Rushdie’s novel, as in Bendet’s collection, characters are brought to life through painted stories. The Enchantress print features a representation of Rushdie’s Lady Black Eyes but with an a+o twist of #staceface wearing her signature large black shades. Intricate gold metallic beading evokes images of Rushdie’s Akbar Empire, while a leather skirt in Botticelli’s Primavera painting is representative of Renaissance Florence. Live at the a+o show, body painting artist, Trina Merry, brings the Enchantress to life using the human body as a canvas.

The collection juxtaposes feminine pieces like lace tops with dramatic bell sleeves, sequin and silk slip dresses, and ruffle skirts with utilitarian separates such as patent leather bombers, camo pants, boxy jackets, camo jackets, and cargo pants. The a+o girl will mix and match these statement pieces, pairing sequin pantsuits with statement tees, embellished floral tops with patent leather skirts and combat boots, sequin embellished mini-skirts with leather varsity jackets, and lace-up thigh-highs and embellished cigarette jeans with tweed jackets with pearl detailing. Each look embodying a woman who is both fierce and feminine.

The quintessential a+o statement jackets and shirts are emblazoned with powerfully bold statements such as “Queen” and “Be The Change You Wish To See In The World,” messages Bendet feels are both representative of the book’s message and the world right now.

Accessories further the urban glamour aesthetic through unexpected features. Handbags are a mix of faux fur totes, intricate foiled printed leather clutches, and black patent leather crossbodies in modern shapes. Shoes have a sexy edge featuring combat boots with heavy hardware accents in plush fabrics, lace-up thigh-highs, and patent leather booties.

Bendet continues building on the world of a+o with her second delivery of eyewear. The collection features shapes including oversized metallic aviators in silvers and rose golds, and signature round-frames.
