New Year New You: Photo Shoot 2017

Blazer & Pants: ETRO Shirt: Brooks Brothers Shoes: Ferragamo Eyewear: Warby Parker

As the new year unfolds, many of us focus on a "new you." For me, this meant a fashionado upgrade. It was time to switch it up a bit with new looks, different styles. I took a more sophisticated approach to my personal style and image so in some of the photos I'm wearing Etro, one of my favorite design labels. Etro does pattern like no one else can and their fit is perfection! And because [I think] I'm a cool 50 year old, I couldn't resist and had to stage a few shots that showcased my ink. You can be dapper yet still be edgy.

One of the best photographers in Atlanta also happens to be one of my best friends... Tomas Espinoza. We've been working together for a long time. Tomas is a perfectionist as am I, so we're a great match. I was able to pull him away from his busy shooting schedule at HGTV and as a freelance photographer to spend half-a- day with me! I'll be replacing some of the fashionado banner images with these. Thanks Tomas!

The Phoenix Sleeve

The Phoenix is the symbol for Scorpio. It represents death and rebirth. [I learned this through my

astrologer

.] All of my tattoos have a personal significance so by making them self-referential my ink gains deeper meaning. As I embark on a new career and shed the old one, hence, -

death and rebirth

- a Phoenix sleeve couldn't be more appropriate. The very gifted

Malia Reynolds

, at

Memorial Tattoo

, has done all my ink.

StylemagVM

is documenting the creation of the sleeve, from start to finish, so you'll get an opportunity to see just how talented Malia is.

Watch it happen!

Birdie gets Inked

This past week, I had the fourth tattoo session for the full sleeve on my right arm. The masterful Malia Reynolds charmed her talents on the "birdie" and the sky surrounding it. The bird, which is the Trogon, is the National bird of Cuba and the orchid-like flowers, called mariposas, are the National flower.

Memorial Tattoo feels like home these days. Phil Colvin, Memorial's owner and Lee at the front desk, welcome everyone with smiles. The other artists pop in for visits and chats. A truly friendly environment - which is important because you want to feel at ease while getting tattooed.

I've been teaching myself to use iMovie. I hope you enjoy my latest 3 minute presentation. Malia does her thing! Note: One of Malia's talents is her speed. She's fast, however, I sped up the footage dramatically, to give Malia super-speed! (and to keep the video from being 2 hours long)

Tit for Tat

Ouch! Yes! Ouch, it hurts!!

Tattoos. I recently had another session and this time it hurt more than the others as my artist worked near bony areas and on my chest. I don’t enjoy the pain at all, but I sure love the product. I got my first tattoo when I was 41 and got hooked with the personal significance of the images I am placing on my body, and with their beauty.

So is it fashion?

To an extent, especially when celebrities are sporting them more and more and they are working their way unto glossy fashion magazines. There is also a certain, underlying fashion/artistic element when choosing where on the body to put a tattoo. Call it what you want, disagree all you like, but it is fashion when you have to think about the area on your body the tattoo will work and look best on.

Tattoos are becoming socially acceptable as they become a mainstream, but lets keep it real: get one for the right reasons-not for fashion- and remember, you wear them for life!

The amazing artist whose done all my work is Malia Reynolds at Memorial Tattoo.
